Three Wanderers internationals selected for AFC Women’s Asian Cup

Western Sydney Wanderers trio Wang Ying, Yuan Cong and Janae DeFazio have all been selected to represent their respective countries at the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Defender Wang and forward Cong have been named in China’s 26-player squad for the tournament by national team Head Coach and former A-Leagues boss, Ante Milicic.

China kick off their Asian Cup campaign with a clash against Bangladesh at CommBank Stadium before then facing Uzbekistan at the same venue.

Milicic’s side then round out the group stage of the tournament with a tricky test against North Korea, with all three of their matches being played in Parramatta.

Meanwhile defender De Fazio has been selected for the Filipinas squad by their Australian Head Coach, Mark Torcaso.

The Filipinas kick off the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on Sunday night in Perth when they face the Matildas.

Torcaso’s side then face South Korea on the Gold Coast before rounding out their group stage with a clash against Iran at the same venue.

“It’s fantastic to see Wang Ying and Yuan Cong recognised at the international level,” said Western Sydney Wanderers Head Coach Geoff Abrahams.

“They’ve worked incredibly hard since joining the Wanderers, and their dedication and performances have earned them this opportunity to represent China on the biggest stage in Asian football.

He continued: “We’re also proud of Janae De Fazio for her selection to the Philippines squad and wish her all the best in the tournament.

“Having three players from our club involved in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup is a real testament to the quality of our program and the pathways we provide for our players.”
