Canberra United cause midweek misery for Sydney FC

Sydney FC’s undefeated streak has come to an end, going down 2-0 away to Canberra United, as the home side moved into top spot on the Ninja A-League ladder.

It was end-to-end action to start the first half at McKellar Park, with long balls causing fast counters and several early chances, a rocket off the boot of Canberra United’s Josie Aulicino on nine minutes forcing a great save from Sydney FC’s Tiahna Robertson.

The home side brought a great run of form into the midweek fixture, with two big wins leading into their clash with the unbeaten Sky Blues, but goals proved hard to come by in the opening 45, another stunning strike from distance by Hayley Taylor-Young right on halftime floating just wide of the top corner.

The vistors’ hopes of a fifth-consecutive match without conceding were dashed early in the second half, as Michelle Heyman went from provider to goalscorer in moments. The veteran sent Sasha Grove off down the right wing in the 53rd minute, before finding herself on the end of a pinpoint square ball to break the deadlock.

Grove was at it again just minutes later, with a stunning left-foot shot just inches away, while Sienna Dale made no mistake when her chance arrived only eight minutes after joining the action, cleaning up a goalmouth scramble to double Canberra United’s lead and seal a crucial victory for the hosts.
