Macarthur FC star named new club captain after stunning debut campaign

Macarthur FC have announced star import Valère Germain as the club’s new captain ahead of the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Germain joined the Bulls ahead of the 2023-24 season from French Ligue 1 side Montpellier and enjoyed a stellar campaign whilst leading the line.

Scoring 12 goals from 27 matches in the Isuzu UTE A-League last season, Germain also found the back of the net four times in seven matches during Macarthur’s run to the AFC Cup ASEAN Zone final.

Showing no signs of slowing down, the former AS Monaco forward most recently played a pivotal role in helping Macarthur FC win this year’s edition of the Australia Cup – their second cup triumph in three years.

Despite being suspended for the final owing to his red card in the semi-final win over NPLM VIC side South Melbourne, Germain bagged four goals in four games to help his side reach the final, where they ultimately defeated Melbourne Victory 1-0.

Germain replaces Mexican Ulises Davila as club captain following his departure from Macarthur and is set to become an even more crucial figure under head coach Mile Sterjovski.

The 34-year-old will spearhead a much-changed Macarthur side heading in the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Following the departures of the likes of winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues to EFL Championship side Coventry City and striker Lachlan Rose to Newcastle Jets, Bulls boss Sterjovski recruited four new players to compliment Germain in attack.

Towering striker Harrison Sawyer joined following an impressive 16-goal season with South Melbourne, winger Marin Jakoliš was signed following his season on loan at Melbourne City, Chris Ikonomidis swapped Melbourne Victory for Macarthur while the club also handed talented young striker Dean Bosnjak a first professional deal.

Furthermore, the club also brought in a serial winner to help supply the ammunition for their new-look frontline, signing former Sydney FC captain and recently recalled Socceroo Luke Brattan on a one-year deal.

Despite picking up the wooden spoon in season 2022-23, the Bulls bounced back under Sterjovski last season and sealed the spot in the Isuzu UTE A-League Finals Series care of a fifth-placed finish in the regular season.

Macarthur FC kick off their 2024-25 campaign with a home clash against Perth Glory at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday October 20.
