Saturday in the A-Leagues: How the action unfolded across all four games

Joe Lolley opened the scoring with a stunning strike in Sydney FC's 5-1 win over Adelaide United.

Round 4 A-Leagues action continued on Saturday with four huge contests spread out across both competitions.

The action got underway with a Saturday triple-header in the Isuzu UTE A-League, as Western United fell to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle Jets at Mars Stadium, then Western Sydney Wanderers defeated Perth Glory 2-0, before the Ufuk Talay era at Sydney FC got off to a perfect as the Sky Blues defeated Adelaide United 5-1.

Saturday’s play finished in the Perth as Liberty A-League leaders the Glory knocked off Adelaide United 2-1 at Macedonia Park to continue their perfect start to the season.

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos came back to haunt his former club as he maintained his red-hot form as Newcastle Jets celebrated their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Western United on Saturday.

Stamatelopoulos made 12 appearances for Western in 2019-10 and his strike one minute before half-time was the difference away at Mars Stadium in Ballarat, where the Jets won for the first time under head coach Rob Stanton.

Western substitute Nikita Rukavytsya thought he equalised in the 86th minute, but it was ruled offside as John Aloisi’s side slipped to a third consecutive defeat, having stunned three-time reigning premiers Melbourne City in Round 1.

MATCH REPORT: Wanderers academy graduate’s first goal in 588 days fuels Western Sydney win over Glory

Western Sydney Wanderers have continued their unbeaten start to the Isuzu UTE A-League season, with full-back duo Jack Clisby and Tate Russell finding the net in a 2-0 victory over Perth Glory on Saturday evening.

Clisby opened the scoring against his former side with a lovely volley just after half-time, before Russell smashed home a second minutes after to wrap up the victory for the Wanderers.

It was Russell’s first goal since returning from a torn ACL, which sidelined him for the entirety of last season, and his first in 588 days (last goal coming on April 2 2022).

Marko Rudan’s side have now taken home eight from a possible 12 points to start the season, taking their record to two wins and two draws heading into the men’s international break.

Sydney took a four-goal lead inside the opening 45 minutes through Lolley and Kucharski, before Fabio Gomes added another to give the Sky Blues their first victory under new coach Ufuk Talay.

A late Susan Phonsongkham winner has ensured Perth Glory’s perfect start to the 2023-24 Liberty A-League season continued, firing home a late goal in the league leaders’ 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Adelaide United on Saturday night.

Perth found themselves behind before half-time, with Dylan Holmes opening the scoring just before half-time for the visitors at Macedonia Park.

Glory responded after the break through Grace Jale – who scored her third goal of the season – before Phonsongkham fired home the winner with time expiring to preserve Glory’s perfect start to the season.
