Victory captain re-signs on multi-year deal as a Matildas defender departs City

Melbourne Victory have secured the services of club captain Kayla Morrison for another two Liberty A-League seasons.

The 27-year-old has spent the past three seasons at the club and has committed to two more under head coach Jeff Hopkins as Victory look to build on a preliminary final finish in the last campaign.

“It’s great to extend my time with this incredible group of girls and this great club,” Morrison said.

“We have been through so much as a team over the past three seasons and I want to continue this special journey with my team.

“Our desire to taste success this season is greater than ever and that’s something I’m really excited to be a part of.”

Morrison joins Claudia Bunge, Beattie Goad, Jessika Nash and Miranda Templeman as the five players contracted by Victory ahead of the 2023-24 season, with more signings to come.

Victory director of football John Didulica said: “we’re pleased to have Kayla back for another two seasons at Melbourne Victory.

“There is no doubt Kayla has been a big part of our success over the past couple of seasons with her leadership and performances on the field and we believe she has even more to give this season.

“She has developed into one of the best defenders in the A-League Women and we’re excited to have her once again part of our squad for the upcoming season.”

Meantime long-term Melbourne City defender Emma Checker has called time on her stint at the club, departing after four seasons – three as captain – following the conclusion of her contract.

“It’s hard to put into words what being at this club has meant to me. I am so grateful for the opportunities I have been given and for everyone who has been part of the journey,” Checker said.

“From my first season going undefeated and winning the double, to the following having to pick ourselves up from missing out on Finals, the highs and lows of the last four years have challenged and fulfilled me.

“Leading the group for the last 3 seasons has been one of the greatest honours of my career. The role of captain motivated me to grow as a person and player in order to be the best teammate I could.

“Finally, I want to thank everyone who has been part of my time at City. I am leaving with lifelong memories and relationships that I will forever hold close to me.”
