Experienced French midfielder joins Jets ahead of upcoming A-Leagues season

Newcastle Jets have signed experienced French midfielder Jason Berthomier from Ligue 2 outfit Valenciennes for the upcoming Isuzu UTE A-League season.

Berthomier joins the club after an extensive stint in France, playing for the likes of Moulins, Bourg-Peronnas, Stade Brestois, Troyes and Clermont Foot – prior to joining Valenciennes in 2022 – making over 200 appearances in total.

The 33-year-old spent the majority of his career featuring in Ligue 2, before earning promotion with Clermont in 2021 – where he spent a season playing in the French top flight, scoring one goal and tallying five assists.

Newcastle is Berthomier’s first club outside France and the attacking midfielder said he’s looking forward to the new challenge.

“I’m excited to discover a new football journey and a new country and lifestyle. I spoke with a lot of players in the league, and they all told me great things about Newcastle and Australia,” he said.

“I can’t wait to be there to start a new chapter. I hope we can have a great season and play great football.

“When I spoke with the coach Rob Stanton, he knew exactly what kind of player I was, and he told me what he expected from me on and off the field. We had a very good discussion and I look forward to meeting him in person along with my new teammates.

“When a coach really wants you it makes things easier. He wants to play an attractive and offensive brand of football which is very exciting.”

Berthomier is the Jets’ eighth off-season signing, joining the likes of Ryan Scott, Jacob Dowse, Lachlan Bayliss and Daniel Wilmering as some of the club’s newest arrivals.

Newcastle open their A-League Men campaign on October 22 against Perth Glory at HBF Park.
