New figures show $16m A-Leagues market is booming

7 Times A-Leagues Clubs Took On The World - And WON

New figures show another year of healthy transfer income for the Isuzu UTE A-League, with a lucrative market worth millions now being accessed by the competition’s clubs.

Across the past two seasons, A-Leagues clubs have banked over $38 million in transfer revenue, with a league-wide pivot to hand more opportunities to younger players paying off handsomely in the transfer market.

In 2024-25, under-23 players played 36% of available match minutes in the Isuzu UTE A-League, up from 34% in 2023-24 and 24% in 2022-23.

After a 337% increase in season 2023-24, there was another significant windfall this term, proving that the explosion was not a one-off.

Across Isuzu UTE A-League season 2024-25, clubs made $16 million in the transfer market across 19 different player sales – which is more than was collected across three seasons between 2020-21 and 2022-23 combined.

While that total figure is down on the prior campaign ($21.9m across 27 sales), the average sale price has actually increased from $813k to $826k.

The sales of Hayden Matthews (Portsmouth), Ben Old (AS Saint-Etienne), Alex Paulsen (Bournemouth), Kasey Bos (Mainz) and Nestory Irankunda (Bayern Munich), in particular, attracted significant fees as clubs in the world’s top leagues keep their eye on football talent down under.

Meanwhile, the Ninja A-League saw three deals with transfer fees attached for a combined total of $111k as Jamilla Rankin (Hoffenheim), Sarina Bolden (FC Como) and Kahli Johnson (Calgary Wild) completed moves abroad.

That figure is down on the season prior, which also saw three moves, but for a combined figure of $374k as the league transfer record was broken on two occasions.

The current transfer window has further cemented the fact that there is a pathway from the A-Leagues to Europe.

Alongside those mentioned above, the likes of Adrian Segecic (Portsmouth), Noah Botic (Austria Wien), Ryan Teague (KV Mechelen), Daniel Arzani (Ferencvaros), Kealey Adamson (QPR), Nicolas Milanovic (Aberdeen), Zac Sapsford (Dundee United) and Jaylan Pearman (QPR) have all sealed lucrative moves abroad.

With more exciting talents emerging all the time, the trend doesn’t look likely to stop any time soon.
