Liberty’s Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week: Victory striker surges back into form

Catch up on the Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week, powered by Opta.

The Isuzu UTE A-League continued over the weekend and there was plenty of late drama, goals and goalkeeper heroics.

Melbourne Victory striker Nikos Vergos was the standout performer of the round after bagging two goals in his side’s crucial 2-1 win over Adelaide United on Saturday night.

This season, Opta will power the Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week using Opta Points – a comprehensive player metric that evaluates a player’s overall contribution to the game. Each Monday, the Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week will be displayed in a 4-3-3 formation, highlighting the best-performing players.

Note: The weekly Team of the Week will feature matches played from Monday to Sunday.

Vergos has struggled for form so far this season but Victory head coach Arthur Diles will be hoping his Greek forward has removed that monkey from his back now following his goalscoring performance in the Original Rivalry.

Joining Vergos in the Team of the Week is Melbourne Victory teammate Juan Mata, who was at his creative best to help steer Victory to just their second win of the season, and Auckland FC forward Sam Cosgrove, who registered his fourth goal of the season in the Black Knights’ 2-1 win over the Mariners.

Following their thrilling 3-1 win over Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the Newcastle Jets have three representatives in the Liberty Isuzu UTE A-League Team of the Week.

Both Eli Adams and Clayton Taylor bagged themselves goals in the 3-1 win whilst defender Daniel Wilmering also secured his spot in the side after an all-action display at full-back. Wellington Phoenix striker earned himself a spot in the team after bagging his fourth goal of the season.

Another side who had three players feature in this week’s Team of the Week are Brisbane Roar, and it’s no surprise they make up a large chunk of the defensive unit.

Goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis, central defender Lucas Herrington and full-back James McGarry all feature at the back after helping their side keep a sixth clean sheet of the season, as the Roar moved into third with a 0-0 draw against the Wanderers.

Finally, Sydney FC defender Alex Grant was a standout performer for the Sky Blues at HBF Park as Ufuk Talay’s side moved back to the top of the table with a 1-0 win over Perth Glory.
