Exciting new role means retired legend Wilkinson’s Sydney FC journey is just getting started

Alex Wilkinson called time on his career at the end of the 2022-23 Isuzu UTE A-League season but he will still be involved with Sydney FC in his role as Head of Football Operations.

The former Sydney FC captain and Championship-winning defender will be responsible for the club’s football operations, including recruitment processes while the Sky Blues legend will also act as a mentor to help youth-team players progress into the A-Leagues.

One of the most decorated players in the A-Leagues, Wilkinson – who won three Championships and as many Premierships with Sydney in a career that amassed more than 350 A-League Men games – will also provide advice on defensive coaching responsibilities.

“I’m excited to begin and looking forward to helping lead this club into a new and successful period in our history,” said the 38-year-old, who helped the Sky Blues reach the Semi Final last season.

“I’m delighted to be staying at the place I enjoyed the most successful and enjoyable part of my career and I hope I can become just as successful in this new appointment.”

A Premiership winner with Central Coast Mariners, the 16-time Socceroos defender also spent a period at Melbourne City before joining Sydney in 2016.

President of The Professional Footballers Australia (PFA), Wilkinson’s newly created role will have a strong focus on player welfare across A-League Men and A-League Women.

“To have a person of Alex’s character, intelligence, influence and experience staying at the club is a real coup for us,” said Sydney CEO Adam Santo.

“He is one of the most well-respected players in A-League history and will become a great ambassador for Sydney FC in the years ahead.

“I’m sure he will become as valuable an asset to Sydney FC off the pitch as he was on it.”
