A-Leagues All Star makes next move: ‘I don’t think there’s any better place to be in Australia’

Melbourne City have announced the signing of A-League All Stars Men representative Kai Trewin on a three-year contract following his Brisbane Roar departure.

Trewin represents City’s first signing on a deal until at least the end of the 2026-27 campaign as they begin preparing for the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League season after the star defender left the Roar at the end of his contract.

The 22-year-old, who is set to line up for the All Stars against Premier League giants Newcastle United in Melbourne on May 24, became the first player to progress through Brisbane’s Academy program and reach 100 A-Leagues appearances for the club in March.

“Kai is an impressive young footballer who we have monitored closely in recent years, and we’re delighted to welcome him to the club,” said City’s director of football Michael Petrillo.

“His age profile as well as his defensive qualities and ability to play out from the back is exactly the type of central defender we look for at City, so I’ve got no doubt that Kai will complement our squad well.”

Trewin debuted for the Roar in 2020 and went on to amass 116 appearances for the Brisbane club.

He scored one goal in 26 matches as the Roar finished ninth in 2023-24, nine points adrift of the top six.

Trewin’s arrival comes after Aurelio Vidmar’s appointment as head coach on a permanent basis and the re-signings of Mathew Leckie and Andrew Nabbout.

“As soon as I was given the opportunity to join City, I jumped at it,” Trewin said.

“The type of football that the club plays and the quality of the facilities are top level – I don’t think there’s any better place to be in Australia.

“Seeing so many young players come to City, develop their game, and go on to make moves overseas and represent the Socceroos was a big reason why I wanted to sign with the club.

“I can’t wait to join my new teammates for a big pre-season and meet the City fans at AAMI Park.”
