Western United will be desperate for a response when they welcome Newcastle Jets to Tarneit on Friday night.
Kat Smith’s Western – who are clinging onto their spot in the top six – suffered the heaviest defeat in their Ninja A-League history – beaten 8-2 by high-flying Brisbane Roar last week and they are back at Ironbark Fields to make amends this week.
It will be Newcastle’s first trip to the venue since they stunned Western 4-2 after extra time in last season’s Elimination Final, though the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in November.
The Jets, who are eighth and two points adrift of Western, have only won one of their past five games (D2 L2).
Wellington Phoenix v Perth Glory
Saturday, January 4th – Porirua Park 2:00pm kick-off AEDT

Wellington Phoenix may have lost last time out but the New Zealanders are a team in form and knocking on the door of the top six.
The Phoenix fell just short against Melbourne City, succumbing to the unbeaten reigning premiers away from home to sit seventh in the standings and a point outside the finals positions as their four-game unbeaten streak came to a halt.
Wellington will be back at Porirua Park, where Football Fern Grace Jale will reunite with former team Perth Glory on Saturday.
Perth, who are ninth and three points adrift of the top six, have lost their past two meetings with Wellington while they are winless across their last two A-Leagues fixtures.
Central Coast Mariners v Adelaide United
Saturday, January 4th – Woy Woy Oval 5:00pm kick-off AEDT

Saturday evening will see fourth face fifth as Central Coast Mariners welcome Adelaide United to Woy Woy.
The fourth-placed Mariners are in the midst of a two-match unbeaten streak following a goalless draw with Melbourne City after edging Perth Glory in Western Australia, while Adelaide snapped a two-game losing run by downing Western Sydney Wanderers.
History is certainly against Adelaide in this fixture.
In the five previous meetings, Central Coast have won all five – keeping four clean sheets and scoring 18 goals.
Brisbane Roar v Canberra United
Saturday, January 4th – Perry Park 6:00pm kick-off AEDT

Can anyone stop Brisbane Roar in their current form?
Brisbane are well and truly red hot, with sister act Laini and Sharn Freier leading the way for the Roar, who are second in the table after dismantling Newcastle Jets 6-1 and Western United 8-2.
Laini Freier has sizzled with back-to-back hat-tricks – the first player in Ninja A-League history to do so, while Sharn has scored twice in the past two matches as star captain Tameka Yallop marshals the title hopefuls.
Canberra United – 10th in the table – will be out to crash the party, but Michelle Heyman and Co. must arrest a six-game losing streak if they are to cause an upset at Perry Park on Saturday.
Sydney FC v Melbourne City
Sunday, January 5th – Leichhardt Oval 5:00pm kick-off AEDT

Football returns to Leichhardt Oval and it will be a Grand Final rematch between two-time reigning champions Sydney FC and Melbourne City on Sunday evening.
Sydney conquered reigning premiers City in last season’s decider but a lot has changed since then as the Melbourne club lead the way in 2024-25.
While City occupy the summit, Ante Juric’s new-look Sky Blues are languishing at the foot of the table with just four points following last week’s Big Blue defeat to Melbourne Victory.
Sydney have lost four straight games, though the last time these teams met in November it ended 1-1.
Melbourne Victory v Western Sydney Wanderers
Sunday, January 5th – Home of the Matildas 5:00pm kick-off AEDT

Melbourne Victory will be out to close the gap on rivals Melbourne City when they entertain Western Sydney Wanderers at the Home of the Matildas.
Victory are enjoying a six-game undefeated streak as they occupy third position in the standings – one point behind Brisbane and four points adrift of City, though they have played one game less than their Melbourne foes.
This will be the first time Victory and Western Sydney have met since Emily Gielnik’s memorable double in February, which was headlined by a stunning long-range effort.
The Wanderers, meanwhile, are second from bottom with just one win in 2024-25.
