A-League All Stars Men & Women to face English giants in historic double-header: Full details

2024 will see an A-League All Stars Women side assembled for the first time ever. They will take on Arsenal Women as part of a history-making evening at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on May 24, which will also see the A-League All Stars Men face Newcastle United.

The Australian Professional Leagues (APL), and event partners TEG Sport and the Victorian Government, have today announced three huge fixtures as part of a Global Football Week Melbourne that will see a men’s and, for the first time ever, a women’s A-League All Stars team take on giants of English football.

Set to take place over two massive nights, the Global Football Week Melbourne will be headlined by the first-ever A-League All Stars Women side who will take on three-time Women’s Super League champions Arsenal Women FC at Marvel Stadium on Friday 24 May, 2024.

This will be the first time Arsenal Women FC has played Down Under, and will see Gunners and CommBank Matildas heroes Steph Catley, Kyra Cooney-Cross and Caitlin Foord face off with former teammates and stars of the Liberty A-League Women, where they first made their name.

On an historic night, the A-League All Stars Men will also face Premier League giants Newcastle United FC to kick off an A-League All Stars double-header. This will be the first time Newcastle has played in Australia for a decade as the Geordies round out a landmark season in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

As part of the Global Football Week Melbourne, A-Leagues great Ange Postecoglou returns to Melbourne for the first-time with high-flying Tottenham Hotspur FC to play Newcastle United FC in an all Premier League match-up on Wednesday 22 May, 2024 at the MCG.

Commenting on the announcement, APL Independent Chair, Stephen Conroy said: “This is a fantastic event for the A-Leagues, for our players to play against the best in the world and for our fans to see our best local talent up against some giants of English football.

“This is also the first time ever we have assembled a women’s A-League All Stars team, and what a fantastic challenge for the stars of the Liberty A-League Women to take on one of the best teams in world football, Arsenal Women FC.

“Arsenal Women and CommBank Matildas stars Foord, Catley and Cooney-Cross got their break in the Liberty A-League Women and it’s going to be fantastic to see them back on home soil playing against former teammates and the next generation of local stars.

“It’s set to be a huge month of football in May, with the Liberty A-League Women’s Grand Final, Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s final series and Grand Final, and these two All Stars fixtures – providing another fantastic opportunity for the stars of the A-Leagues to perform on the world stage.”

Arsenal Sporting Director, Edu said: “We’re so happy our women’s team will be playing in Australia for the first time ever this May.

“We’re really proud that this special match against A-League All Stars Women will give our supporters in Australia a fantastic opportunity to see our players in action and give our players a chance to connect with everyone who loves the game there.

“We all shared in the excitement, saw huge attendances and viewing figures of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia.  This is a chance for us to build on that in partnership with the A-League which is experiencing its own exciting growth too.”

Newcastle United FC Head Coach, Eddie Howe said: “This is a great opportunity to showcase Newcastle United at two iconic venues in an iconic city as the club continues to grow globally.

“We are privileged to have so many incredible supporters around the world, and it’s a chance to be able to play in front of many in Australia who wouldn’t ordinarily get the chance to see the team.

“We look forward to engaging with our supporters in Melbourne and giving them the opportunity to feel closer to the club.”

Spurs Assistant Coach and A-Leagues and Subway Socceroos legend Mile Jedinak as well as Tottenham Hotspur Chief Football Officer Scott Munn were alongside Minister for Sport and Tourism Steve Dimopoulos, former Arsenal Women  and current Matilda and Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lydia Williams, plus Melbourne Victory winger Daniel Arzani and APL Independent Chair Stephen Conroy in Melbourne to announce the matches.
