Josep Gombau bemoaned Western Sydney’s failure to kill off Adelaide United prior to the visitors snatching a 1-1 draw at ANZ Stadium on Wedneday night.
Oriol Riera, Steven Lustica and Mark Bridge all went close to opening the scoring before Jack Clisby finally put Wanderers ahead after half-time.
But they were denied a third successive victory by Apostolos Stamatelopoulos’ late equaliser for the Reds, who remain three points ahead in fourth.
“We think we deserved to win the game. We had three good chances to score [before half-time],” Gombau told Fox Sports.
“[Adelaide’s equalising] corner came from a transition that we had an opportunity to score a second goal.
“We lost two points. If we had won this game there was an opportunity to be in the top four.”
Despite the late disappointment, Western Sydney have now lost only once in five matches and Gombau appears to have overcome the rocky beginning to his tenure.
However, the Spaniard is not getting carried away ahead of Saturday’s visit to Wellington Phoenix.
“The A-League is a quality league and to have five games [with one] loss is a good sign,” he said.
“But we need to go game-by-game. We have a game in three days which is difficult and travelling to New Zealand is a long trip.”
