Phoenix rue lack of ruthless finishing

Interim Phoenix coach Chris Greenacre said he was pleased with the amount of chances created but disappointed with the end product in his side’s 0-0 draw with Adelaide United at a wet and wild Westpac on Sunday.

In conditions more akin to winter than the Summer of Football, both sides struggled in the conditions with the Phoenix denied on many occasions by a brilliant Eugene Galekovic.

“I think it’s clear to everybody that we just didn’t take our opportunities,” Greenacre said after the game. 

“I think we had eight shots on target, 12 in total and when you create that many chances you have to take them and you have to be ruthless,” Greenacre said.

“Overall we take another point, but I think it’s probably three points lost.”

Interim co-coach of Phoenix, Des Buckingham, echoed Greenacre’s sentiments lamenting two points lost against a side sitting bottom of the league. 

“We wanted three points tonight and like Chris [Greenacre] said we’re disappointed to drop points,” Buckingham said.

“We felt we played well enough to get something from the game and we’ll take a point and a clean sheet, but we felt we should have at least put one of those [chances] in the back of the net.”

The draw maintained the side’s upturn in results with Phoenix unbeaten since Round 10. 

The club next travel to Perth to face Glory on Thursday night.
