Jets put Adelaide to the sword

The Newcastle Jets romped to a thumping 6-1 National Youth League win over Adelaide United at Wanderers Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds took the lead early through Thomas Briscoe and threatened to go on with it before the Jets wrestled back control of the match with a goal to Brandon Lundy just after the half-hour mark to see the sides go to the half-time break locked a 1-1.

The Jets dominated the second stanza with a Kale Bradbery hat-trick and goals to Andrew Hoole and substitute Radovan Pavicevic completing an emphatic come-from-behind win.

The victory sees the Newcastle consolidate third place on the NYL ladder but with just one match of the season remaining they cannot catch league leaders Melbourne Victory nor second placed Central Coast Mariners.

The match started in perfect conditions and it was Adelaide who held the upper hand from the opening whistle, getting on the scoreboard after just eight minutes courtesy of striker Thomas Briscoe.

A low Liam Wooding corner was met by Briscoe on the edge of the area and he drilled a thundering volley into the corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The visitors were full of running and looked dangerous, with right winger Awer Mabil giving the Jets defence all sorts of problems with his pace and skill.

The home side gradually worked their way back into the contest and started to engineer some productive work through the midfield with Bobby Russell and Jacob Pepper going close with chances from the edge of the area.

The Jets duly equalised in the 37th minute when Lundy poked home from just 10 metres out after the Reds defence failed to clear a Newcastle corner.

Brazilian Bernardo Ribiero almost gave the Jets the lead a few minutes later when he was allowed to run across the 18-yard line before curling a shot towards the top corner which was swatted away by Adelaide goalkeeper John Hall as the sides went to the break even.

The Jets took control of the match in the second half when Bradbery netted his first of the afternoon. Pepper took the ball down the right flank then darted into the box before squaring a ball for Bradbery who turned and slotted from 12 yards out.

Newcastle extended their lead nine minutes later with another attack down the right wing. This time Andrew Hoole got the better of the Reds defence and ghosted into the box where he shaped to cross for Bradbery but instead slid a neat shot inside the near post to make it 3-1 after 65 minutes.

The Reds didn’t give up and almost clawed a goal back in the 70th minute when Mabil got away down the left wing before crossing to substitute striker Nathan Konstandopoulos on the edge of the area, but Jack Duncan saved well.

Newcastle extinguished any hope of a comeback when Bradbery snared his second goal after punctuating his weaving run into the box with a low angled shot inside the near post to make it 4-1 after 73 minutes.

The Jets grabbed their fifth when Mitchell Oxborrow floated a ball over the top for Pavicevic who showed great poise to slot his shot past an advancing Hall and into the far corner of the net.

Newcastle completed the rout when Bradbery bagged his hat-trick in injury time after taking a pass from Ribiero before calmly slotting home.
