ASSISTANT Senior Coach and Head Youth Coach Mike Mulvey represented Gold Coast United as the club threw its support behind the bid to bring the 2018 Commonwealth Games to the region.
Mulvey recently gave a speech to visiting delegates who were in town to meet with local school children as the countdown to the final vote gathers pace.
“The final voting is due in November so the delegates are visiting the Gold Coast,” Mulvey said.
“I spoke to the European delegation and I-m told the Asian and African delegations come later on. In support of the bid, local schools have adopted a country and sat with the delegates from that country to mingle and chat about what they have learned.
“I was with the Isle of Man delegation and basically my job was to extol the virtues of the Gold Coast and talk about the facilities we have here and what hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games could mean for the area in the future.
“It was particularly pleasing to speak about the wealth of footballing talent we have here – people like Tommy Oar of course and other elite athletes from the Gold Coast who I coached during my time at the Queensland Academy of Sport.
“Our own very successful National Youth League team was another topic of course and it was great to be able to tell them how rich Queensland is with sporting talent and how much benefit could be derived from having some of the world-s best athletes visit us for a major games in 2018.
“Ultimately, it will be a fantastic event for the Gold Coast and we should all support it,” he said.
