Governor-General and Patron of Women-s Football, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will on Friday meet the Westfield Matildas squad for the first time since their historic AFC Women-s Asian Cup win.
The four day training camp will be the Westfield Matildas first since winning the AFC Women-s Asian Cup as they begin their countdown to the FIFA Women-s World Cup 2011 in Germany.
Head of Women-s Football Leeanne Grantham will introduce Ms Bryce to Westfield Matildas Head Coach Tom Sermanni, Captain Melissa Barbieri and the majority of the AFC Asian Cup squad following the team-s training session to be held in Canberra on Friday.
“We are thrilled that the Governor-General is available to meet our Westfield Matildas this week,” said Grantham.
“Although some of our girls are still playing in the US and Europe, the majority of our AFC championship winning squad will be there to welcome our Patron for the first time and share some of their experiences.
“The players are extremely excited to be meeting such an exemplary and accomplished woman.
“No doubt Her Excellency will be delighted to hear from the players who will have an opportunity to speak informally with her over morning tea.
“Several of our players are as young as 16 and the thrill of discussing their possible selection in the FIFA Women’s World Cup squad with our Patron will be one experience they will never forget.”
The Westfield Matildas commence training today, at the AIS Football Fields in Canberra, for their upcoming internationals against Mexico and Taiwan at the 2010 Peace Queen Cup in the Korea Republic followed by a match against the number 2 women’s team in the World, Germany in Germany on October 28th.
