Melbourne City have parted ways with import Javier Cabrera with immediate effect.
The Uruguayan forward started in seven and featured in nine Hyundai A-League matches after joining City in the off-season from hometown club Montevideo Wanderers. On Sunday, it was mutually agreed that his contract would be terminated.
The 28-year-old’s departure opens up a visa spot for the competition’s second-placed club, and former Melbourne Victory forward, and free agent, Marco Rojas has been linked with Erick Mombaerts’ side.
Cabrera had not played in City’s last two matches after being sidelined with a knee injury amid rumours he wanted to return to his native South America, as reported in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Following a 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar on Saturday, City have only won one of their last four matches and have fallen 11 points behind runaway leaders Sydney FC.
Next week, Mombaerts’ team host bottom of the table Newcastle Jets, who played their first match after the sacking of Ernie Merrick on Friday, going down 2-1 to Sydney FC.
